If you are an American Expat under 65 years old, you need to file a US tax return this year if your worldwide gross income during the year 2020 was more than the amounts shown below:
- Single..................................... $12,400
- Married Filing Jointly...........$24,800
- Married Filing Separately....$5
- Head of Household...............$18,650
- Qualified Widower...............$24,800
***If you are Self Employed: You must file a tax return if your net earnings from self-employment total $400 or more. This is even if your gross income from your worldwide sources is below the tax filing threshold for your filing status.

Most American Expats who are married with spouses of foreign nationalities, decide to file as Married Filing Separately. Please be aware that if this is your filing status, you’re required to file US taxes if your gross worldwide income is $5 or more.
