Are you the type of person that does all kinds of research before making a big decision to make sure you're extra prepared for everything?
OR
Are you the type of person that makes that big decision then figures out the details along the way?
No matter whether you're a planner or more spontaneous when it comes to moving abroad, I am here to help! I left my life in the US and moved to Europe! I am beyond happy with my decision and hope you are/will be to. Nonetheless, there are some adult things we need to make sure to take care of after we move abroad. Yes, I'm talking about taxes. But don't worry, I'm here to break down the thresholds of when you are required to file taxes.
When am I required to file taxes?
The US tax system regulates that your foreign income is taxed at the same marginal rate as any income earned inside the country.
If you're an American living abroad or a resident card (green card) holder, you will need to file a US federal tax return during tax season if your income exceeds the thresholds listed below. It doesn't matter where you earned your income and it doesn't matter what currency you received your money in.
Here's what matters: your age, the amount of money earned, and how you are filing. For 2021-2022 tax returns, you must file if you exceed the following minimum thresholds:
- US citizens filing as Self-Employed: $400
- US citizens filing as Single: $12,550 if you are under 65, $14,250 if you are 65 or older
- US citizens filing as Married Filing Jointly: $24,800
- US citizens filing as Married Filing Separately: $5 (Yes, cinco.)
- For head of household: $18,800 if you are under 65, $20,500 if are 65 or older
I know that at this point, some might feel like giving up and just avoiding filing your taxes. You're probably even thinking, well... what happens if I don't? Check out my blog on what could happen if you don't file your taxes.
