A CR1 visa, is an immigrant visa issued to an alien who is married to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and wishes to live in the U.S. with their spouse. For purposes of this visa, a spouse is a legally wedded husband or wife. This includes same-sex couples.
The CR in CR1 stands for “Conditional Resident.” CR1 Visas entitle their holder to receive "Conditional" Permanent Residency within the United States for a period of 2 years. The reason why the person granted this type of visa becomes a "Conditional Resident" is because this visa is only provided to couples who have been married for less than 2 years. A CR1 Visa will result in the applicant obtaining "conditional" permanent residency within the US and after a period of two years, the applicant can apply to "Remove Conditions" 90 days before the conditional permanent resident card expires and they will be issued a regular 10 year Green Card.
